Reducing anxiety after diagnosis
Anxiety is not always a negative thing it can be a coping mechanism. It helps individuals prepare for the future and account for a difficult situation. One cannot completely eliminate anxiety however when it is excessive it is important to manage it. If children exhibit avoidance behavior that is a situation that may require professional help which could include therapy. Examples: being unwilling to go to school refusing to go to a particular appointment. In dealing with anxiety remember to take small steps. Remember you are a role model for your children. If you are anxious, your child may become anxious as well.
Prior experiences may also feed into anxiety. Anxiety can be deceptive. Depending on the age of the child, signs might include: irritability and regressive behavior. There may also be physical complaints such as shortness of breath ,diarrhea headache, frequent urination and many others.
The key is to learn to identify and manage anxiety in a nonjudgmental fashion. There are many techniques therapists and educators may use to keep anxiety in check.
